Patron Conduct Policy

The Aldrich Free Public Library is a valuable community resource of materials, information services, and programs for the public benefit. Its doors are open to all regardless of origin, age, background or views. It is the library’s responsibility to maintain an environment which is conducive to study and quiet conversation. In order to safeguard the public’s right of access to the library, to ensure the safety of patrons and staff and to protect the library and it’s resources the Aldrich Free Public Library has established the following rules of conduct and behavior:

  • Any misconduct or inappropriate behavior that disturbs others or hinders them in their use of the library or library materials is not permitted. This includes loud and disruptive conversations, shouting, and the use of profane and/or abusive language.
  • Inappropriate or revealing clothing that is offensive is not allowed. Beach attire is not allowed (including and not limited to; bathing suits, bikinis, articles of clothing where undergarments are visible, speedos and other revealing items). Shirts and footwear are REQUIRED.
  • Entering non-public areas of the library without prior permission is not allowed. Permission must be granted by authorized library personnel.
  • Eating and drinking in the library is not permitted except during library approved functions.
  • The use of alcohol, illegal drugs and/or tobacco products is prohibited on library property (including inside and outside the building).
  • The library is not responsible for personal belongings left unattended.
  • The library reserves the right to inspect all bags, purses, briefcases, backpacks, etc. to help assure compliance with library check-out procedures.
  • Solicitation on library property is not permitted.
  • Theft or vandalism of library property will be prosecuted. This includes the building, equipment, furniture, and collections. Minors found damaging/involved with damage will have their parents and/or legal guardians contacted. Police will be notified when extensive or costly damage occurs.
  • Animals, other than those trained/licensed to assist disabled patrons, are not allowed in the library.
  • The violation of federal, state, or local ordinances occurring on library property will be prosecuted, and library privileges may be suspended and/or revoked at the discretion of the library director. Individuals involved in such violations may also be banned from the property at the discretion of the library director.
  • The viewing of pornographic, obscene, rude and/or offensive sites on any computer in the library is prohibited.
  • Sleeping is not allowed in any part of the library. Patrons found to be sleeping will be woken up and asked to relocate to a different part of the library. This is a health and safety issue for both the patrons and library staff.

Persons who fail to comply with these policies will be asked to leave the library premises. Police will be notified when necessary.

Unattended Children Policy

The Aldrich Free Public Library is dedicated to providing a secure and welcoming environment to youth of all ages. However, the staff cannot be responsible for the safety and well-being of younger children while they are using the library’s facility and services. The following policy has been established to ensure a positive, safe library experience:

  • All children aged 11 and younger must be accompanied by a parent, legal guardian or responsible caregiver who remains with them throughout their stay.
  • Children aged 12 and older may use the library unattended provided that their behavior is not disruptive or destructive. They are expected to follow the general behavior policy for all Aldrich Free Public Library patrons.
  • Children must leave the library at closing time. If a child’s ride has not arrived by closing, staff will attempt to contact a parent or legal guardian. If they are unsuccessful in contacting a parent or legal guardian, police will be notified.
